RETHINKING SCHOOLS

Rethinking Schools is not explicitly about Palestine, but the magazine, website, and books provide models of k-12 social justice teaching, in terms of both content and pedagogy. The teaching articles, all written by the teachers themselves, include hundreds of examples of how to use role plays, dialogue journals, project-based learning, and other student-centered approaches to teaching critical thinking about students’ lives, communities, and the world.

Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question

Conceived by the Institute for Palestine Studies as part of a joint project with the Palestinian Museum, The Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question traces the history of modern Palestine, from the end of the Ottoman era to the present.

Consisting in the description of various aspects of the Palestine Question that is simultaneously objective and committed, the Encyclopedia presents the Palestinians as they are—purposeful actors and not just victims.

Following years of preparation and several stages of implementation, the Encyclopedia is now a fully-bilingual platform geared towards academics, students, journalists, and the general public.

Visualizing Palestine

Visualizing Palestine creates narrative interventions that convey the urgent and the actionable. They strive to capture not just stories of struggle, but of solidarity, sumud (steadfastness), and inspiration. Their visual tools ensure that factual, liberatory narratives about Palestine are visible, accessible, and interconnected with those of other movements working for collective liberation.

Project 48

Project48 provides educational material, eyewitness testimonies, images, videos and artifacts that bring to life the Nakba (“Catastrophe” in Arabic) and its generational impact, as well as the ongoing Palestinian struggle against colonial erasure and the return of refugees to their ancestral lands.

Ancestors of Palestinian Liberation

Ancestors of Palestinian Liberation is a project aiming to uplift, learn from and celebrate the lives and work of some of the Ancestors that have shaped the diverse and resilient fabric of Palestinian culture — past, present, and forthcoming. ​​In light of western attempts at historical erasure, this project serves as a tool to bring Palestinian names, faces, and histories into everyday spaces. Let us learn from the stories and voices of these Ancestors to further deepen our understanding of Palestinian contributions to our world today. 

How Poetry Became a Tool of Resistance for Palestinians

The Time article “How Poetry Became a Tool of Resistance for Palestinians” explores how Palestinian poets, including Refaat Alareer and Mahmoud Darwish, have utilized poetry as a form of resistance. Their works serve as powerful expressions of resilience and identity.

FACING THE NAKBA

An Educational Project of Jewish Voice for Peace

This 7-part curriculum is aimed at Jewish adults, but contains valuable resources and materials. The lesson plans are a gradual, process-heavy approach to facing the realities of Palestinian life before, during, and after 1948 that might be helpful in classrooms or organizations with many students/participants raised with Zionist beliefs.

PALESTINE TEACHING TRUNK

The PALESTINE TEACHING TRUNK is an online resource and an actual trunk available to teachers in the Seattle, Washington, area. It includes secondary teaching units of various lengths, study guides and other resources. One useful activity is the Occupation Game, which is described in Part V of Literature About Palestinians Under Occupation.

US Campaign for Palestinian Rights

Lots of important context and valuable information and resources for high school students and adults. The section Not That Complicated includes the best resources for K-12 classrooms. The video “Palestine 101: Not That Complicated” is accurate, but a little dry and fact-heavy for high school students.

Some of the most relevant resources are curated in the red tabs above the video. Note the AFSC site Gaza Unlocked under Gaza; Grassroots Jerusalem under Jerusalem, and “Introduction to the Practicalities of the Right of Return” and other multimedia resources from the BADIL Resource Center under Right of Return.

PALESTINIAN ACADEMIC SOCIETY FOR THE
STUDY OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (PASSIA)

PALESTINIAN ACADEMIC SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (PASSIA) is a Jerusalem-based Palestinian organization that produces maps, booklets, and research reports on Palestine that can be downloaded from their website. They are an important resource for up-to-date facts and maps.

PALESTINE POSTER PROJECT ARCHIVES

PALESTINE POSTER PROJECT ARCHIVES is a major digital archive of posters by and about Palestine, including historical maps and posters. Most are from the 20thand 21stcenturies, but the earliest map dates back to 1500. The site also includes Our Roots Are Still Alive: The History of the Palestinian People, a 1977 publication by People’s Press in San Francisco, CA.

PALESTINE REMIX

PALESTINE REMIX (Aljazeera Media Network 2015) provides remix technology, instructions, a helpful search function and access to dozens of documentaries and other footage about Palestine so students can research and create their own videos.
